They're officially engaged!
I'm back!!! :D Not to mention that my back isn't back in action yet! Monday last, my sis and BIL-to-be were officially engaged. Amidst a tonne of chaos (of which my sister doesn't know a thing) the ceremony went on smoothly. I didn't in the least expect that an engagement or nichyadhartham (in Tamizh) would be done in such a tremendous fashion. I expected the presents to be exchanged, the deed to be read and ta daaa its over, we go back home! But no, this was such an expansive thingy. Go here for pictures and you'll know what I'm talking about (at least the TamBrahms would)!
Alrite, I may (or may not) be back with more on the engagement ceremony itself, but it all depends on how much I want to rant about it, but thats it for now. Go on and view the pictures and read the captions under each to understand the flow better. :D

such an elaborate affair..
=)
thanks for sharing
i love the mehendi g3! = ) thanks for sharing this momentus occasion with us, looks very elaborated! Guess its good that u know whats its gonna be like when it comes to your turn = ) Hugs, hope your back is much better soon!
wow the mehindi looked beautiful and even the lady - Ramya. Congrats to her :-D
ooohhh.. love the mehendi. nothing is more beautiful than a bride with mehendi... Congrats! and M.I. .. welcome to my club of having bro-in-law and before you know it, the non-stop blabbering of nieces and nephews :D
Finally I get to be know Ramya Krishna(n) :) btw... friends, a few weeks back I did mention the striking resemblence between the two sisters... now I rest my case :)
BTW, it is surprising that rings got exchanged... surprising coz it didn't happen in my engagement... and it was as simplistic as Boy gave gifts (read sweets & clothes) to Girl and family... Girl's parents exchanged gifts (read sweets & clothes) with Boy's family... Girl was shy... Boy was ecstatic... and before anyone knew we were engaged... no adambaram, no reading of text, nothing to do with either TamBrams or Protestants...
not to forget, there was no cake cutting too... TamBrams are indeed going global... :)
wanted to mention about the cross cultural influence that was quite obvious through the snaps, but CM seems to have said it all. :)
i will speak from experience...
period after engagement before marriage is the most romantic in one's life.
wish your sis lotta fun!
SuperN,
Yep, she's all happy, err, THEY're happy. ;) Will pass your wishes to her.
DHARMA,
Yep, I'm back, and glad to be back!
ADITI,
Yeah, both the mehendi and the event were elaborate.
MUSH,
Yep, it was! I was rather taken aback myself. Usually, this isn't the way it happens. Like CM says (and the way I pictured it) usually even the boy or the girl is not required for the Betrothal. The parents simply exchange pleasantries/gifts/sweets et al, and ta daa the couple is engaged. But this one was phew, one elaborate function!
Yep, my back/legs/thighs/feet is better! Thank you :)
RIMS,
Thanks, I'll pass your wishes across to her.
IDAH,
Mehendi, mehendi everywhere, lol. Thank you. I'm waiting to be ranting away about my nieces and nephews. Perhaps I'll start a whole new blog to rant about them (her kids and mine ;))
CM,
Resemblance again?! Phew, I'm done explaining!
About the cross-cultural influence, I was surprised myself :-/ Really! And that cake, was the boy's idea ;)
DHARMA,
Like I was just telling CM, the ring or cake isn't usually a part of the ceremony, but I somehow liked it. I mean, I guess its ok to be adapting to something else once in a while a lil bit so these things don't become overly predictable. :)
ORACLE,
My sister is proving you right already! :-P
lovely pix. thankx for sharing!
